In this article, I will point out basic do's and don't that you can use as a road map for a successful running of your LPG business:
1. Know Your Competitors
More than knowing about yourself, you also need to know about your competitors. Spy on them. See your competitors as healthy rivals, contenders. If you are in a location with two or more LPG gas plants, know it is now a shared profit between all parties. Either make friends or create an healthy competition. This will prove your business competitive position.
2. Run Discounts And Promo's
Promo's encourage or seduce potential customers, new and old. Your business can offer discounts on refills, much lower than your competitors.
3. Advertisement
Advertising helps contribute to the growth, enlargement or prosperity of your business. There are many ways to promote a business venture. A well advertisement make publicity of a business. It gives public awareness. You can advertise upgrades, raise, or your business innovatives and ideas. The best thing is, you don't have to spend lots of money on promotional EXPENSE. There are various ways to reduce the cost of promoting your business.
Your business can sponsor a book or stage public entertainment, promote on the spot. However, if you are on budget, you can print bill posters or bill sticker. Employ someone who post up bills or placards on walls or billboards.
4. Know Your Space
Understand your location of business venture, pertaining to a particular place or region, how well do you know the local authorities, royalists and street boys. You want to keep paying your dues, right? Also, you don't want to sell high cost products to people living in rural communities. No one will patronize your business if you sell high price per kg. Learn more about the location of your business. Try to ask questions from local authorities. Know the cost of living in that region, as this will help you set up a proper business plan and also give you hint on how to set your price.
5. No Price Tag
Never publicise your price per kg. Let customers read through the gas pump dashboard for hints. Price head ups mostly drives customers away to competitors. Everyone wants cheap stuff, but not quality service. Remember that!
6. Do Not Weigh
If you are the gas pump attendant, do not use a scale for refills. Most scale are not accurate, and also customers are smart. I will not also recommend a fish scale. Mistake could occur during refilling, and for some reasons, a scale is the true detector. Note, keep away your digital scale out of sight from customers. If they see one, they will request. (This is for gas plant only, retail resellers do require a weigh scale ).
7. Division Of Labor
Employ operators and sales staff for different specifications. Never allow a sales person to operate the gas pump, or the gas skid operators be in charge of stock, goods and sales recordings.

TIPS:
i) Always remember to take your financial and sales recordings everyday.
ii) Have a reserve power supply in case of power outage/failure at the gas plant. High powered generators is a must have. Also, the solar panels system is not a bad idea, if you can afford that.
iii) Always keep reserve gas supplies in filled up cylinder tanks, in a 50kg, 3 or more cylinders. In a case of engine failure or faulty gas pump dispenser, these reserve gas cylinders can be used for refilling for customers using the tank-to-tank method, until the issues are rectified.
iv) Always remember to check your storage tank gauge level indicator. And also pre-order when you noticed your gas level is at 10% on the gauge.
8. Do Not Cheat Your Customers
As said earlier, customers are smart. They know their energy consumption and how long a refill would last for them, and if your business fail to meet their expectations, they won't patronize you again. However, some incident can't be preventable at the gas plant. Most faults are from machines, and not from the operators per say, which ever way's, try as much to be transparent with your customers, and don't cheat them.
9. Have A Tools Box, With Extra Spare Parts.
Always have extra spare parts for every necessary engines and tools at your gas plant. Replace adapters, valves and regulators as recommended by the relevant regulators.
10. Fire Safety Precautions
Always have a fire extinguisher nearby. When a gas leak is detected, extinguish all flames, or go to the nearest exist safe with the gas cylinder bottles. You can also have four buckers filled up with sand, just in case.

11. Do not switch on any electrical - switches or appliances. Inspect the gas circuit regularly. Only skilled persons must work on gas circuits. Also, do not plug phone or phone accessories or any electrical gadgets to a gas circuit.
12. Sell Other Merchandise
You can engage in other trade or venture within the oil and gas sector. Involve your business in commerce, whatever can be purchased and sold in trade or market. Offer goods and services, exchange commodities and so on.
13. Pay Them Well
Do not depend solely on your employees in terms of financial and sales managements. Offer the best work environment. Most theft in business occurs when employees are underpaid. Make your business staffs and operators happy as always, then your business will grow.
14. Total Closure
After the day work, operators in charge of gas pumps should ensure that all valves for motor engines, refilling nozzles, be closed. Power circuits, all should also be switch off. Never leave gas circuit in on position overnight. A device that claim to help detect leakage of combustible gas from domestic LPG cylinder bottles is now available in the local markets.
Lastly, if your business is setup in rural areas of communities that lack stable electricity supply, to run your gas business successfully, consider obtaining a diesel powered generator or a powerful gasoline generator.
