Safety wise, a lot of PRECAUTIONS is needed here. While those who are doing this don't see anything wrong here, I think we need to educate people on the risks, especially for LPG gas.
Connecting a gasoline generation to an LPG gas cylinder bottle is the latest Innovative trend going on in Nigeria lately. Although, the carburetor is a little different. The carburetor could be single or dual chamber. If it's dual chamber then it can work with petrol or LPG gas. Well, more flexibility, right?
The single chamber carburetor limits you to only the gas option. If you want to switch to petrol, you would have to remove it and replace with the one for petrol.
As long as you keep the cylinder outside, they say, avoiding any leakages which wouldn't be a problem if it's outside anyway as the any leakages would disperse the gas off.
Simple laws of diffusion, you did think?
Most importantly, try not to DELIBERATELY set the cylinder on fire, you're good.
As energy is becoming expensive these days in Nigeria, especially with the new electricity tariffs, the only problem is cost. However, fortunately, this conversation can cost close to N25,000 naira.
Outside Nigeria such a set up no suppose cost, in India for example. But in Nigeria, everything is upside down.
This set up would make so much sense if you had a biogas plant attached to sewer to create methane and propane gases.
Safety Precautions And Prevention Using Converted Generator And LPG
Buy long hose. Simple solution. Make sure the hose pipe connecting the LPG gas cylinder bottle is very long. The cylinder is outside house and kitchen. You no want hear story. Just a quick reminder, do not put gas under sun or hot place.
People greediness and lack of safety awareness na it dey cause wahala. I myself can't wait for July for government to start CNG sales. According to my friend who is using the current LPG for his Generator...6k to full 12kg and that is what he's been using since last 2 weeks.
I'm just waiting for CNG to enter market and be made available. Cheaper and safer
Risks Involve In Converted Generator And LPG
To me, this gas thing looks risky. I really don't know if it's same with cooking gas, I mean that for gas cylinder to burner, safety valve is installed, also known as cutoff valves. If it's the same, just heat from sun could explode it, not to talk of heat from generator if you want constant supply.
Increase in temperature will result to increase in gas pressure. Put am outside house but within a cool area.
I like the idea, but I care more on safety. The host could leak after a long time, heat too is another problem, and the cyclinders should even be inside the home, not under sun or in a compartment close to the generator.
Just keep the cylinder outside. It can leak from now to tomorrow, it will only diffuse and spread out fast and up, if only it is kept in a well-ventilated space.
Four (4) feet away from the generator is enough. Of course common sense says the generator should be outside too.
Comparing Petrol Generator To LPG Converted Generator
The emissions for LPG converted generator are much lower. Extremely low. I've also heard that it makes less noise. But the truth remains that, the risks Involve are all the same. Safety precautions is needed to be put in placed.
Is Solar Panel System More Better To LPG Converted Generator
Why not go solar?
The best is still solar, clean and clear.
I don't buy into this idea no matter what. It never appeal to me. It's like a bottle neck strategy : not solving any problem, just a bypass or another look of the original problem.
For that solar, I know it can be expensive. Not everyone can afford N3 million one time payment, as you may need more KVA To power you house or work place.
Like I said earlier on, this innovation is not even new... Ask anyone who stays in India, most use it to run their cars or tricycles (Keke)... Likewise extracting biogas (methane) from your septic tank to run your cooking stove and your generator set.
Please, always stay safe.
