Is Cooking Gas Cylinder Safe To Use In The Sun - Will It Explode?

A lot of people worried about using their cook gas cylinder in the sun. Should you be worried? Will your gas cylinder explode if exposed to extreme sunlight?

No!! Gas cylinders will not explode if left or used in the sun, unless only if it has passed the expiry date or damaged by rust, which leaves dent or holes on them. LPG gas cylinders are designed for a maximum temperature of 60 degrees Celsius. There are reasons why it is always recommended to go for high quality, original gas cylinder bottles, with BIS/ISI mark. In countries such as india, as per Indian Standard (BIS), manufacturers if gas cylinders are subjected to produce gas bottles with maximum pressure of LPG at 60 degree Celcius. During gas cylinders production, one cylinder in every batch of new cylinders is tested for burst pressure. The pressure at which the gas cylinder bursts is 85 - 90 kg/cm2. For many countries of the world, as per the country regulatory, is 15.87 kg/cm2, which is the design pressure of all LPG gas bottles.

Will A Gas Cylinder Explode If Left Under The Sun

Another reason why gas cylinders will not  react and explode if used in the sun is because, LPG gas cylinders are designed to be full while allowing 20% of the space for the natural expansion of the LPG. In other words, they are oversized. This allows room for vapour space above in gas cylinder bottle so to avoid excessive pressure, which may rise with the gas cylinder. Now for a normal gas cylinder to burst, the pressure has to be higher than 60 degree Celsius.

Also, during gas cylinder manufacturing process, gas bottles are always silver or light grey in colour. This helps to reflect radiant heat, and not absorb heat. So, it is very unlikely that you would ever have a problem if gas cylinders are used outdoor in the sun. However, gas cylinders are advised to be kept in a well-ventilated space, and ensure that the cylinders are not expose to source of Ignition.
