How Do You Know How Full A Gas Bottle Is By Weight?

Whether you are just a regular consumer of LPG gas or maybe you are just a gas station attendant, there is a need to have a digital scale at home or at LPG gas refilling sites. The digital scale is an alternative way to check the amount if LPG gas being refilled into any particular gas cylinder bottles. It is also used for checking the gas remnant in a gas bottle. If you are a consumer of Lpg gas, a digital scale can help you measure the specific amount of LPG content sold to you. This in turn, helps you prevent cheating from any LPG gas skid operators or attendants.

Also, for LPG gas skid operators or attendants, a digital scale can help to determine the amount of LPG content remaining in a gas cylinder bottle before a refill. This in turn will help prevent overfilling of the gas cylinder.

Unlike water, 1 KG of LPG does not equals  1 Litre (L) of LPG. This is because the density of specific gravity of LPG is less than water. Here is a simple illustration:

* Amount of Litre (L):

1 kilogram (KG) => 1.96 Litre (L).

This means, 1 kilogram (KG) gives us 1.96 (L). So, if a 14 kilograms of LPG gas is refilled, that is equivalent to 27.44 Litre (L).

14 KG => 27.44 L

Conversely, 1 Litre (L) of LPG weighs 0.51 kilogram (KG).

Details are mostly stamped on the neck ring top or bottom of every LPG gas cylinder bottles. For 3kg, 5kg, 6kg and 10kg, these details can be found on the bottom ring dimension. However, for 25kg and 50kg gas tanks, these details are stamped on the neck ring area. You need these details to be able to effectively calculate the value of tare weight and LPG worth of any gas cylinder bottles.

When a gas cylinder is weighed on a digital scale, the difference between the scale reading and the tare weight should indicate approximately how much gas remains in the particular gas cylinder bottle. The tare weight is the empty weight of the LPG gas cylinder, and the tare (empty) weight of the gas cylinder bottle is also stamped on cylinder bottles, so may not really need a digital scale to know this. However, along with the gas bottle dimensions, they can vary greatly by the manufacturer. For example, older gas bottles tend to be heavier than more recent  - also material used to manufacture them can have great influence on the tare weight.

The fact is, tare weight calculates all the gas cylinder bottle dimensions as empty. But the truth is, the main part of gas cylinders is the middle. This is known as the LPG worth. Both the neck ring and bottom ring dimensions only put additional weight on gas cylinders. Gas cylinders tare weight are mostly mistaken as LPG worth. LPG worth as the name implies, is the total amount of LPG gas can be contained in a particular gas cylinder bottle. A gas cylinder bottle with the tare weight of 7.5kg on the digital scale, can actually hold 6kg of gas as the LPG worth.

The same goes for any gas cylinder bottles. The additional handle (neck ring) and bottom ring dimensions only add extra extra weight on gas cylinder bottles.
