LPG gas is known to cause natural rubber and some plastics to deteriorate, which is why hose pipes are considered to have a finite life. LPG hose manufacturers appear to adopt different methods for dealing with this.
Most LPG hose now comes in three (3) different layers, which makes it difficult for rats or other objects to penetrate through them. Two common types of hose, the smaller "OD" hose, which is of U.S origin has a thin inner liner that appears to be made of an inert blue plastic material. The UK hose is not lined but is twice the layer, apparently different approach to helping hose last longer in the presence of LPG. The lack of an extra layer of liner wall may be one reason gas installers recommend replacing LPG hose pipes every five years.
Gas hose will inevitably deteriorate with age, so they should be inspected. For wear and damage, and replaced from time to time. Low pressure hose pipes are vulnerable, and should be changed every three years. If you are using gas bottle with regulator, you need to use the right hose for your gas cylinder to burner connection. If you are using a low pressure regulator, you will need different hose for high pressure regulators, as this type of gas regulator releases LPG in high pressure speed. Using hose specifically for low pressure regulators for high pressure type, is not ideal, as the LPG attacks the rubber hose, the stage of deterioration depends on the type of LPG hose being used.
