LPG gas can be stored in steel tanks, cylinders or containers. However, there is no hidden meaning behind painting of cylinder bottles in different colours. LPG cylinder bottles, depending on the brands or manufacturers, are painted in various colours. In Nigeria, the colour of LPG cylinder bottles or tanks are based on manufacturers taste, and not as a means of identification.

The commercial LPG cylinders are even painted in whatever colours the manufacturers feel is best. Most of these cylinders are mostly substandard, refurbished, and made up of fake metals. This counterfeiting continues more because there are no regulatory bodies or organization that governed the rules of petroleum and explosive safety, including quality standards of gas cylinders in Nigeria. In other countries, the colour of LPG cylinder bottles or containers is governed by regulators, for example, in the UK, where LPG regulatory agency mandate that domestic LPG cylinder bottles should be painted in signal "RED" colour (Propane) or "BLUE" (Butane), for the sake of standardization of identity. Same as countries such as in the UK, Wales, Australia and many Western countries. In these countries listed above, LPG is sold in two forms: commercial propane and butane, and are painted in "RED" or "BLUE" colours as per the design approved by regulators for the sake of standardization of identity.
