Energy Conversion For LPG Gas For Home Appliance

Energy equivalent conversion: 1kw/hour = 3.6 MJ

In Nigeria, a kg of LPG => 1.96 litre. Nigeria LPG contains approximately 27MJ per litre. The 50kg gas cylinder tank contains about 96 litres of LPG it 2414MJ of energy. Some regulator are rated in Mega Joules or MJ/hour. However, this is a measure of input, and not the output. Output is typically measured in kilowatts. The MJ input and kw outputs are directly related but are affected by the efficiency of the regulator.

For example, a 25MJ gas cooker might have an output of 6.2kw. Now, if you do the math, dividing 25 MJ by 3.6 MJ, you would expect that the output to be 6.94 kw, not 6.2 kw. The difference is that the gas cooker is 89.3% efficient. No gas appliance is 100% efficient, which is why we have the star rating system to judge the relative performance of different models. Now that you have the background information. A gas cooker, for example, a 15 MJ (5.8 star rating) gas cooker running at its maximum setting will last approximately 147 hours on a 50kg gas cylinder tank. We know this because 50kg gas bottle contains 2414 MJ. The math is as follows:

2414 MJ ÷ 15 MJ
=> 146 hours
